Good Neighbor Pharmacy NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition
Congratulations to student pharmacy teams from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy, the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, and the University of the Pacific Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy for being the top three finalists in the NCPA student business plan competition! These teams will present their business plans in a live competition at NCPA's Annual Convention this October. This year's competition drew submissions from 39 schools and colleges of pharmacy.

"Every year, we are impressed by the quality and caliber of the student business plans, and this year is no different," said NCPA President Donnie Calhoun, RPh, a pharmacy owner in Anniston, Ala. "All of the students are to be commended on their hard work and efforts to put together a comprehensive business plan, and we look forward to seeing the top three finalists showcase their plans for independent pharmacy ownership in a live competition at our Annual Convention in October."

Team members and the advisor for the three finalist teams will receive complimentary registration, travel, and lodging to NCPA's 115th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition in Orlando, Fla. October 12-16, where they will compete for first, second, and third place in an exciting, live competition. The winners will receive the following awards:

  • First Place: $3,000 to the NCPA student chapter and $3,000 contributed to the school in the dean's name to promote independent pharmacy.

  • Second Place: $2,000 to the NCPA student chapter and $2,000 contributed to the school in the dean's name to promote independent pharmacy.

  • Third Place: $1,000 to the NCPA student chapter and $1,000 contributed to the school in the dean's name to promote independent pharmacy.

The remaining finalists in the top ten are: the University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy; the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy; the University of Oklahoma at Tulsa College of Pharmacy; the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy; and Washington State University College of Pharmacy. Top 10 Reasons to Attend Annual Convention in Orlando

Written By: Tyler Staten, PharmD Candidate 2014, Harding University College of Pharmacy

  1. Network, network, network, did I say network?
Yeah, it is that important! Maybe you have heard the saying "Pharmacy is a small world." It is true! We must continue to make connections and ties wherever we go, and you never know when you might need to contact a person that you have networked with in the past for ideas, experience, or connections in a new area to which you have moved. Take advantage of the networking receptions with your peers, the pharmacist networking receptions, as well as the exposition hall. Find someone from your area, from an area you intend to move one day, network with an SLC member, and even an NCPA staff member. Make all the connections while you can. It helps build people skills, which will benefit your ability to connect with patients.
  2. Future Pharmacists' Programming!
This year's student programming is focused around you! Our convention committee has worked to make the programming tailored to what would benefit you during school and for your future career in independent pharmacy. Sessions include: business plan basics, emerging and alternate models of care, pharmacy purchasing loan options, a free lunch session featuring a legislative congressional update, pharmacy niche panel, rise and residency breakfast session, business plan and chapter posters session in the exposition hall, and student networking reception. All this is available to you!
  3. Pharmacists' Programming!
Been to convention before? About to go into practice? Come to the pharmacists' programming! There are a lot of sessions that are full of information for practitioners, so why don't you get ahead of the game and come listen to those sessions as well? There will be sessions on technology, social media, front-end overhaul (one of my personal favorites), buying and selling a pharmacy, junior partnerships, profitable niche services to implement, and many more. This is your opportunity to grow your knowledge base and interact with practicing community pharmacists.
  4. Residency Showcase!
As always, the exhibition hall will contain a residency showcase featuring many community pharmacy residencies, their programs, and how to apply. This is a great chance to meet some of the community pharmacy residency program directors and residents and interact with them before you go to ASHP's Midyear Clinical Meeting in December, consider this your practice round before Midyear! Be sure to come prepared with your current CV in case they ask for a copy!
  5. Good Neighbor Pharmacy NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Business Plan Competition!
The top three teams will be presenting and competing to be selected as the winners of the 2013 Good Neighbor Pharmacy NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Business Plan Competition on Saturday at 2:30PM. This is a growing event and is the highlight of convention for attendees. Come watch the presentation and pretend that you are the banker, and the teams are selling their plan to you, vying for a loan! This is a great way to watch the culmination of effort put forth into creating a business plan, and watch as their efforts pay off! Make sure that you and your chapter get your ideas together to submit and possibly participate, if chosen, for next year! Remember: Competition Saturday, winner announced Sunday!
  6. Learn how to get politically involved!
One of NCPA's biggest tasks, as an organization, is the representation of all 23,000 independent pharmacies in the United States to the legislators in Washington, D.C. You have a voice and your impact can make a difference! Legislators want to hear stories of how their constituents are affected on a daily basis by issues that pharmacies face! Come to the Government Affairs forum on Sunday for a chance to learn about what is going on, how NCPA is addressing it, and what role you can play as a student pharmacist! Whether your voice is heard locally, within the state, or at the national level, all representation of pharmacy is important! Come hear how you can make a difference!!
  7. Exposition Hall and Exhibitor Theater!
Starting Saturday at 6:30PM, over 350 businesses that directly work with pharmacies will be in town for participation in the exposition hall! Come by and see what these companies have to offer for independent pharmacies and how they can implement their goods and services to improve the business of pharmacy! Always an exciting time!
  8. Poster Session!
The Poster Session is a new and growing opportunity for your chapter to present what it has done in the past year, as well as seeing what other chapters have done! Or for students to present the research that they have done in the past year. The poster session will be housed inside the exhibition hall. Talk to Whitney about how to get your chapter's poster submitted! (
  9. Keynote Address!
Forty-second President of the United States, William J. (Bill) Clinton will be the keynote speaker on Monday morning to address the conference attendees! His address might include information regarding his work to lessen the abuse of prescription drugs, his public service during and after office, and many other issues that he is currently working on. It will be a great chance to hear what he has to say, so I would encourage you to extend your stay at convention to hear what he has to say to the conference attendees! Read his full biography here.
  10. Universal Studios and Walt Disney World!
The convention is being held at the Walt Disney World, Swan and Dolphin Resort, so you will be in the heart of Walt Disney World in the Epcot area of the park! Right in the middle of the action! And on Tuesday night, the closing session includes an admission ticket to the Walt Disney World Theme park.

Also, are you a Harry Potter Fan? Hogwart's is at Universal Studios, which is not that far away from Walt Disney!

Come Meet, Learn, and Succeed at the NCPA 115th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition and with Disney's help you can "Make Your Dreams Come True!"
