Biologic Therapy in the Treatment of Rheumatologic Diseases
Sunday, October 24th
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Sponsored by Centocor Ortho Biotech Inc.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects 1.3 million people in the United States, 70% of who are women. A systematic review of studies suggests that within 5 years after diagnosis, an average of 15% of RA patients may be moderately to severely disabled (i.e. Functional Class III/IV). Therapy directed against tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, has been found to be efficacious in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe RA. In this presentation, the speaker will review the pathophysiology of RA and discuss an approach to its treatment, focusing on the efficacy and safety of a specific subcutaneous anti-TNFα monoclonal antibody. He will also discuss the use of this agent in treating spondyloarthropathies, including ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.
