What led you to a career in independent community pharmacy?
I wanted to have a positive impact on patients and my community. My experience with large retail chains left me without these connections.
What makes your pharmacy standout from the competition?
Customer service, compounding pharmacy, complete DME source, free delivery, 100% healthcare focus, post mastectomy garments and fittings, website and community outreach.
What are your biggest challenges?
Erosion of prescription profits, mounting cost of conducting business, Medicare billing/bidding, limited OTC business, combatting chain customer loyalty programs.
Describe a recent, rewarding experience with a patient:
A female patient came in with cuts and sores on her hands, the result of a lifelong problem with unknown diagnoses from various dermatologists. I recommended that she continue to search for a physician that would give her a correct diagnosis, she had given up due to failed therapies from her doctors. I recommended a local dermatologist I am familiar with and she went to see him and he gave her medications to treat her hands. These medications still left cuts and sores on her hands. I used stri-strips and bandaged each cut after reapplying the medication prescribed by the doctor to keep her skin moist to promote healing. The patient came back two weeks later and her hands were healed- no cuts, no dry cracked hands. I recommended that she keep using the medication to moisturize her hands and prevent cuts.
