ACCP Joins APhA, ASCP, and NCPA in Support of X12
Alexandria, Virginia - September 19, 2002

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) has joined the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA), and the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) in support of the X12 billing standard for pharmacist professional services. X12 is an organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which develops uniform standards for electronic data exchange of health insurance claims including professional pharmacy claims. An example of such a data exchange would be a pharmacist submitting health care claim information electronically to the proper insurance carrier or government agent to be compensated for services provided to patients, information previously communicated via a HCFA- 1500 paper form.

"We are very pleased to be a part of this very important collaborative effort with NCPA, APhA, and ASCP," said C. Edwin Webb, ACCP's Director of Government and Professional Affairs. "Working to assure that the full range of pharmacists' professional and clinical services, in every practice setting, are effectively incorporated into the emerging national electronic standards for health care transactions is among the most important activities that our national pharmacy organizations can take in assuring our members' professional success in the future." As one of the four pharmacy groups supporting X12, ACCP will be represented on the X12 Pharmacy Advisory Panel. The panel has been convened to provide oversight for ASC X12N 837 standard, specifically, the Health Care Claim: Pharmacy Professional Services Companion Guide (Pharmacist Companion Guide). This endeavor’s success is crucial to enable pharmacists to bill for their professional services and to help oversee the standards in place for pharmacy to ensure successful processing of these types of claims.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is a professional and scientific society that provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources enabling clinical pharmacists to achieve excellence in practice and research. Founded in 1979, ACCP's more than 7,000 members are practitioners, scientists, educators, administrators, students, residents, fellows, and others committed to excellence in clinical pharmacy and patient pharmacotherapy.

The American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) is the first established and largest professional association of pharmacists in the United States. APhA’s 50,000 members include practicing pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and others interested in advancing the profession. The Association is a leader in providing professional information and education for pharmacists and an advocate for improved health through the provision of pharmaceutical care.

The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) is the international professional association that provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to advance the practice of senior care pharmacy. Consultant pharmacists specializing in senior care pharmacy practice are essential participants in the health care system, recognized and valued for the practice of pharmaceutical care for the senior population and people with chronic illness. In their role as medication therapy experts, consultant pharmacists take responsibility for their patients' medication-related needs; ensure that their patients' medications are the most appropriate, the most effective, the safest possible, and are used correctly; and identify, resolve, and prevent medication-related problems that may interfere with the goals of therapy. ASCP's 7,000 members manage and improve drug therapy and improve the quality of life of geriatric patients and other individuals residing in a variety of environments, including nursing facilities, subacute care and assisted living facilities, psychiatric hospitals, hospice programs, and in home and community-based care.

The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) represents the pharmacist owners, managers, and employees of nearly 25,000 independent community pharmacies across the country. The nation’s independent pharmacies, independent pharmacy franchises, and independent chains dispense nearly half of the nation's three billion retail prescription medicines and account for more than $50 billion in prescription drug sales each year.
