PSTAC Launches Website
Alexandria, Virginia - April 26, 2005

The Pharmacist Services Technical Advisory Coalition (PSTAC) has released a website, www.pstac.org, intended to provide information regarding billing for professional pharmacy services in the X12 837 environment.

PSTAC, formerly known as the X12 Pharmacy Advisory Panel, was founded in 2002 to improve the coding infrastructure necessary to support billing for pharmacists’ professional services.  The Coalition works to provide the national leadership necessary to position and secure pharmacy’s place in the electronic data interchange (EDI) health encounter/claims processing and payment environment concerning all health care providers’ professional services.

The newly launched PSTAC website contains information regarding the purpose and mission of the coalition, coalition membership, information regarding billing for services, as well as the provision of a form to request assistance from the coalition regarding the addition, change, or deletion of codes to be used within the electronic data interchange (EDI) health encounter/claims processing system.

The Transaction and Code Set rules in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) specify the use of the national standards for transacting electronic health care claims for professional services throughout the entire health care industry, including claims for professional services from physicians, pharmacists, and other allied health care providers, durable medical equipment, and other health care related products or services previously submitted via the paper claim format.

The Pharmacy Professional Services Companion Guide (CG), the pharmacy specific companion to the X12N 837 Health Care Claim: Professional Implementation Guide, is available for purchase from Washington Publishing, www.wpc-edi.com/hipaa.  The CG provides instruction on the electronic data transaction segments that are relevant to pharmacists’ professional services along with sample cases from disease state management and durable medical equipment (DME) claims. The transactions in the CG are based on national uniform standards that have been streamlined to facilitate implementation by pharmacy software vendors and payors.

The current Coalition member organizations are: the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP), the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), and the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA).
