This course focuses on how to help patients better understand and manage their respiratory disease conditions, and how to better monitor the health of patients with a respiratory disease condition. Topics include: physiology, pathophysiology of asthma versus Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, pharmacology and clinical management, implementation, marketing techniques, and innovative respiratory care programs and services. Pharmacists will also learn about tools to monitor, document, and bill for pharmacist care services for patients with asthma. Additionally, the five components of the NIPCO Pharmacist Care Model relative to respiratory care will be addressed.
This program can be applied toward the attainment of the NIPCO Pharmacist Care Diplomate Credential. This program will provide participants with 15 ACPE CE contact hours (1.5 CEUs) of continuing pharmaceutical education, and is available online.

- Describe the clinical features of asthma that are used to assess and classify a patient’s asthma.
- Summarize environmental control of asthma and how to develop trigger avoidance plans for patients.
- Describe the National Institutes of Health guidelines for the treatment of asthma.
- Explain how to educate patients about the various pharmacotherapeutic options to treat asthma.
- Discuss the types of inhaler devices and demonstrate the steps for proper inhalation technique.
- Relate the considerations for the management of asthma in special patients.
- Discuss the differences between patients with asthma and COPD.
- Describe at least five specific services pharmacists can provide for patients with asthma or COPD and how to bill for them.
- Relate how to promote a Respiratory Care Program to a community.
