Management Institute

The NCPA Management Institute was established in 1989 to provide independent pharmacists the management information, training, and support necessary to operate a professional and efficient practice.

The Institute, created with initial funding from Marion Laboratories, also acts as a research and data resource center for entities seeking assistance in negotiations on behalf of pharmacy with public insurers, health plans, and other purchasers of pharmacy services.

Informed Business Decisions

The Institute offers a comprehensive package of programs and services designed to keep independent pharmacists abreast of critical data marketplace intelligence and provides current financial, economic, management, marketing, demographic, and legal information that pharmacy owners and managers need to make objective, rational decisions. The Institute presents a broad range of marketing and management material through seminars, workshops, articles, and brochures.

Consultation

The Institute provides one-on-one consultation services to individual pharmacists at national and regional meetings through seminars and workshops and through special meetings at the Institute's national offices.

Research

Over the years, the Institute has conducted, supported, and funded numerous research projects. Here are a few highlights:

  • The Long Range Impact of Participation in Third-Party Prescription Programs on Independent Pharmacies' Profits, a pilot research project with the Virginia Commonwealth University partially funded by the American College of Apothecaries.

  • An Analysis of the Impact of Third-Party Prescription Programs on Independent Community Pharmacy. This pilot research project, conducted with Mercer University, documents the need for pharmacy owners to effectively evaluate third-party prescription programs.

  • Barriers and Problems in Pharmacy Entrepreneurship identifies specific problems, real and perceived, that new pharmacy entrepreneurs face.

Evaluating Third-Party Prescription Programs

This booklet describes a comprehensive, step-by-step method to determine the effect—on a pharmacy's bottom line—of participating in third-party prescription drug programs. Through the use of tried and true financial ratios and formulae, and recent marketplace data, pharmacy owners and managers can determine specific adjustments they may need to make to maintain acceptable profit levels if they decide to accept participation in third-party drug programs.

Information Packet on Buying or Selling an Independent Pharmacy

This information packet is available to anyone considering buying or selling a pharmacy, be it through an immediate and direct trans-action or ownership transfer over a period of time. It discusses how to value a pharmacy, evaluate lease agreement and site locations, transfer of ownership to an employee or partner, and how to develop a plan to buy or sell a pharmacy

Grant Assistance Program (G.A.P.)

Community pharmacists applying for grant funding from the Community Pharmacy Foundation can receive assistance with the application process from the Grant Assistance Program (GAP), a joint project of the National Community Pharmacists Foundation and the Community Pharmacy Foundation.

Pharmacists contacting NCPA will be provided assistance at no charge to prepare and submit a grant application for a community pharmacy project to the Community Pharmacy Foundation. The guidance will be provided to community pharmacists wishing to submit grant applications for projects that foster the development of new capabilities and continuous improvements in the delivery of patient care.

Additional information about the first-of-its kind service exclusively for practicing community pharmacists is now available from NCPA by going to the Community Pharmacy Foundation Web site at www.communitypharmacyfoundation.org
