Surescripts Support for Independent Pharmacy
Surescripts supports opportunities for community pharmacists to improve care, increase efficiency and reduce costs with e-prescribing and new capabilities, expanding the role of pharmacists. As the largest health information network, Surescripts connects pharmacy to healthcare communities across the nation, exchanging vast amounts of information with a wide array of system applications and other networks.
Pharmacy leadership and Surescripts helped establish e-prescribing as one of greatest success stories in health information technology. The Surescripts network includes the majority of prescribers and health plans through EHR software applications and over 95% of pharmacy locations, connected through their IT vendor systems. Through partnerships with hundreds of technology companies, they ensure information exchanged adheres to the requirements of national standards bodies like NCPDP and government agencies like CMS and the DEA.
Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS)
Surescripts e-prescription routing services allow healthcare providers to use one efficient workflow to securely send electronic prescriptions for both legend drugs and controlled substances. Now legal in 49 states and DC, EPCS offers benefits of reduced fraud and abuse, more efficient and secure electronic record keeping, less callbacks and added safety. Pharmacists, doctors and patients can enjoy the convenience and accountability of doing all prescriptions electronically. Visit Surescripts online to learn more about EPCS.

Complementary Support to Pharmacy IT System Vendors
In conjunction with the NCPA, Surescripts provides the Independent Pharmacy Help Line (IPL)*. This is not intended to replace the support pharmacists get from their pharmacy system vendor, but to supplement it with live assistance on e-prescribing issues. The IPL is managed by certified pharmacy technicians with significant e-prescribing experience, and offers assistance in three important ways:
Helps to document and classify issues
Executes the research needed to address and resolve the question or issue
Provides personal follow-up to ensure that pharmacists receive additional assistance as needed
You can download and print the IPL flyer and share it with your staff. For assistance with common e-prescribing questions, download Surescripts FAQs. When you and your pharmacy IT vendor need help addressing critical, urgent or persistent issues, contact the Independent Pharmacy Help Line for assistance.
