Dawne O'Brien is a 2014 PharmD candidate from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in Tucson, AZ. Dawne became interested in independent pharmacy after completing a rural pharmacy rotation in Northern Arizona. She noticed the disparities in the quality and type of healthcare that patients in rural areas were receiving, and decided that she wanted to open a pharmacy in medically underserved area. After this experience Dawne became very involved with her NCPA chapter and began helping at local health fairs, speaking to students about independent pharmacy and recruiting students to join NCPA. To expand upon the knowledge and experience she gained while working at a local independent pharmacy, Dawne decided to learn the entrepreneurial side of owning a business. Over the course of a year, Dawne and three students developed a business plan that was submitted to the 2012 Good Neighbor Pharmacy NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Business Plan Competition on behalf of their College. In this new position, Dawne hopes to encourage pharmacy students to become involved with pharmacy legislation and advocacy within their profession. She also hopes to inspire pharmacy students to open their own independent pharmacy so they can impact the quality of patient care within their communities.
