In an effort to promote interest in independent community pharmacy ownership, the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) and the NCPA Foundation have established the NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition. The goal of the competition is to motivate pharmacy students to create the blueprint necessary for buying an existing independent community pharmacy or to develop a new pharmacy. The NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition is the first national competition of its kind in the pharmacy profession. The competition is named to honor two great champions of independent pharmacy, Neil Pruitt, Sr., and H. Joseph Schutte.
Please send an abstract, an application and 8 copies of the business plan to NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Business Plan Competition Attn: Cheron McCrae, 100 Daingerfield Rd. Alexandria, VA 22314.
Deadline for submitting a Business Plan is May 1, 2009.
The award is supported by contributions from the H. Joseph Schutte family, the Neil Pruitt family, and the NCPA Foundation.
Eligibility:
- Teams must involve pharmacy students, all of whom must be active NCPA student members
- Each team must have one (1) team advisor that is a pharmacist member of NCPA or who is a full-time faculty member at your pharmacy school
- The pharmacy school from which the team is selected must have an active NCPA Student Chapter. NOTE: Only one application will be accepted per student chapter
- Up to four (4) members team, including the team sponsor, must be available to attend the NCPA Convention if selected as finalists
Award Description:
The team members and team sponsor of the 3 finalists will receive complimentary registration, travel and lodging to the NCPA Convention. After the live presentations are scored, the awards are as follows.
Third Place—$1000 to the NCPA student chapter, and $1000 in the Dean's name to promote independent pharmacy at the school.
Second Place—$2000 to the NCPA student chapter, and $2000 in the Dean's name to promote independent pharmacy at the school.
First Place—$3000 to the NCPA student chapter, and $3000 in the Dean's name to promote independent pharmacy at the school. The team members, team advisor, and Dean will receive complimentary registration, travel, and lodging to the Multiple Location Conference (formerly the Independent Chain Conference).
2008 Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition Winners
The three finalist teams made live presentations of their business plans before the competition nine judges and an audience during NCPA's 110th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition held Oct. 11-15 in Tampa, Florida. NCPA President Stephen Giroux, P.D., announced the results of the competition during the convention's opening general session.

2008 Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition Finalists
Teams of pharmacy students from the top ten universities were named at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) annual meeting in Chicago, IL, on Sunday, July 20th. The top ten teams resulted from the 30 entries that the competition generated. Congratulations to all participating teams.
