Chapter Member Recruitment Ideas for Fall 2010

Looking for new recruitment ideas to grow your chapter's membership base in the upcoming fall semester? Check out the following chapter recruitment ideas to retain and increase participation from your active members and stimulate the admission of new members! Look for more ideas in next month's newsletter!
  • Chapters may opt to waive or reduce chapter dues for new members or P4 students who join NCPA. Don't forget to promote the great student benefits that NCPA members receive such as scholarships and discounted meeting registration fees! This increases the value of the membership and is always good to highlight at any gathering. (Find out more about NCPA membership and benefits at www.ncpanet.org).

  • Distribute a flier that highlights your chapter and its website (if applicable). Make sure to obtain permission from your School or College first! Target groups such as P1 students, transfer students, or pre-pharmacy students.

  • Organize a behind-the-scenes tour of a nearby independent community pharmacy. If you need help in locating a pharmacy, contact NCPA student affairs. Require students to become members of NCPA in order to attend. Write an article about your pharmacy tour for your campus paper or America's Pharmacist. This is great publicity for both parties and an opportunity to publish your writing!

  • Partner with other campus organizations to co-sponsor a highly visible event on campus, such as health fair, seminar, or barbeque to raise awareness of your chapter and its activities. Additionally, you could hold an inter-professional meeting or event with another professional organization. Distribute information on both organizations to attendees.

  • Make each prospective member feel special by making an effort to remember names and to smile and greet people by name when they are spotted around campus. Use name tags at your first few meetings of the semester! Remember to always speak with excitement and pride when describing your chapter.

Keynote Speaker—Bruce Jenner

Bruce Jenner is arguably the greatest athlete in the world. He captivated audiences when he broke the world record by scoring 8,634 points in the decathlon at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, earning him a Gold medal and the title of "World's Greatest Athlete." Jenner was the 1976 recipient of the James E. Sullivan award as the top amateur athlete in the United States. The Associate Press also named him "Male Athlete of the Year" later that same year. Bruce was also inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame in 1986, the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, the Connecticut Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the United States National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1980.

Bruce is also a highly respected and much sought-after motivational speaker, especially within the corporate sector. In his life, Bruce chooses to find his inner champion, and wrote a book "Finding the Champion Within" to reflect his ventures.

Currently, Bruce is an ambassador for Boehringer Ingelheim's "DRIVE4COPD" campaign. Bruce works to raise awareness for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, which is a serious lung disease. As part of the event, Bruce drove across the country to screen people to see if they are at risk, and educate audiences about the disease.

As an entrepreneur, actor, author, spokesperson and television personality, Bruce remains enthusiastic in all of his endeavors. A man of all trades, Bruce's efforts have made him an inspiration to audiences around the world. He maintains his hero and role model status to this day.

The 2010 Good Neighbor Pharmacy NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition drew entries from 35 schools and colleges of pharmacy—a record number of submissions in the competition's seven years of existence. The first national competition of its kind in the pharmacy profession, the contest is named to honor two great champions of independent community pharmacy, the late Neil Pruitt Sr. and the late H. Joseph Schutte. The goal of the competition is to motivate pharmacy students to create a business model for buying an existing independent community pharmacy or developing a new pharmacy. Through this competition, NCPA is better able to prepare tomorrow's pharmacy entrepreneurs for a successful future. The competition is supported by Good Neighbor Pharmacy, Pharmacists Mutual Companies, and the NCPA Foundation.
