How many years have you been practicing as a pharmacist?
I have been a practicing pharmacist for 11 years.

What led you to a career in independent pharmacy?
My passion for patient care lead me to independent pharmacy. I previously worked in an environment where true patient care was an afterthought and I wanted to provide an opportunity for pharmacists to use their knowledge in a team approach with other healthcare providers to provide the best possible care for patients.

What makes your pharmacy stand out from the competition?
Our pharmacy has managed to create an atmosphere where medical providers trust our knowledge and skills to make sure patients receive the best care possible. We make sure that every person is working at the top of their license to allow our workflow to maximize our patient encounters that lead to great patient outcomes. We have also taken on many great opportunities that allow us to do more beyond dispensing. We’ve expanded a variety of clinical services to maximize the scope of practice of the pharmacist as the medication expert.

What are your biggest challenges?
Our biggest challenge is being pioneers in these innovative services that have no road map yet are so crucial to the survival of independent pharmacy and our pharmacy profession in general.

Some smaller challenges are the same as any other independent pharmacies:

  • Declining reimbursements

  • DIR Fees and Clawbacks

Describe a recent, rewarding experience with a patient
One day we received a call from someone who was interested to get a pharmacogentic test done for his mom because she reports none of the medications seem to work for her. After coordinating with the patient’s medical provider, we performed the pharmacogentic test. The results were astonishing. The patient and her 2 sons attended the personalized medication review session I conducted. Their mother was a poor metabolizer of key enzymes involved in antidepressants and antipsychotics. There was only 1 medication that was going to work for her. All medications she had tried showed up on the results with actionable evidence that they were not going to work for her. She had been hospitalized several times due to uncontrolled depression and had also lost her job. The sons were very emotional and apologetic for not having trusted their mom. The whole family had judged her that she was being dramatic and didn't understand that she had seen several doctors and been on several medications without getting better. The experience was so rewarding as I recommended the only medication that was genetically okay for her to take. The family was so grateful and they only wished they had known about his test a year before.

How has NCPA helped your business?
NCPA has been very helpful by providing education and resources about opportunities independent pharmacies can profit from. NCPA has been very instrumental in providing business tools that have helped me set up bench marks and also watch for key indicators for business success.
