Pharmacist: Yervand "Van" Simonyan

Pharmacy: Medicine Shoppe

City, State: St. Louis, Missouri

How many years have you been practicing as a pharmacist? 6 years

What led you to a career in independent community pharmacy?
There is no better environment that independent community pharmacy for a pharmacist to best utilize his/her skills and knowledge in serving the many unmet medication needs of our society. The independent community pharmacy is uniquely positioned to serve as a strong advocate for the interests of the countless patients who require the unique knowledge of a pharmacist to ensure they use their medications safely, effectively, and affordably.

What makes your pharmacy stand out from the competition?
The ability to offer top-notch, individualized service as well the supreme convenience of same-day medication delivery to a region that covers the entire St. Louis Metro area and beyond.

What are your biggest challenges?
Navigating through our increasingly impersonal healthcare system to get our patients what they need.

Describe a recent, rewarding experience with a patient:
Helping patients get the care they need, especially those who have fallen through the cracks of the healthcare system, is something our pharmacy strives to provide whenever possible. After meeting a patient at a local facility who had no doctor and no medications, but plenty of serious medical conditions, our pharmacy successfully scheduled an appointment on behalf of the patient with a local physician, assisted the patient in medicare enrollment for a prescription drug plan, and got him the medications and attention he had been missing for too long. If our pharmacy can help anyone in need of healthcare, we do it.

How has NCPA helped your business?
By providing a voice for all of us independent pharmacists across the country and by spreading awareness of the unique challenges we face in operating our pharmacies so that more people can benefit from a truly independent pharmacy, because there is nothing else like it.
