What led you to a career in independent community pharmacy?

Middleport Family Health Center (MFHC) is part of an eight store group of independent pharmacies and businesses located in the Western New York area. The pharmacy was acquired in 1983 by University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy alums Bruce Moden and Steve Giroux through the purchase of a chain store known as Peterson Drug. Since then, the Moden-Giroux organization has worked to establish a progressive patient-oriented pharmacy practice.

What makes your pharmacy standout from the competition?

Our pharmacy has continued to pursue our mission by incorporating medication therapy management and immunization services, offering a full line pharmacy complete with durable medical equipment and supplies, servicing assisted living facilities and offering medication adherence and refill synchronization services. Most recently, our pharmacy has established a PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency Program, developed a Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) program, and begun providing consultation services at a local primary care provider.

What are your biggest challenges?

In New York State, pharmacists are currently allowed to administer influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations to patients 18 years or older. Pharmacists are working to expand the number of vaccines they are allowed to administer and to reduce the age of the patients they can immunize. One challenge pharmacy is all too familiar with is in our dealings with PBMs. Here in New York State we scratched the surface in unveiling the anticompetitive practices of PBMs when the Anti-Mandatory Mail Order bill was signed into law in mid-December 2011. This bill will allow patients to get the same medications for the same price at the pharmacy of their choice.

Describe a recent, rewarding experience with a patient:

With the development of our Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) program, we have been able to provide our patients with the education they need. During the individual and group sessions our patients have achieved many of their self-care behavior goals which is rewarding for both pharmacist and patient.

How has NCPA helped your business?

NCPA helps our pharmacies provide excellent patient care to our customers by offering unique opportunities such as Dispose My Meds and adherence programs, along with the development of SureScripts and a Community CCRx Medicare Part D drug plan. We have benefited from the content in the DASPA program in preparation for successfully initiating our DSME program. NCPA also provides America's Pharmacist and NCPA Digest along with continuing education topics that directly impact the world of independent community pharmacy.
