Orlando, Fla., Oct. 14, 2013 - Mike James, the owner of two pharmacies in Raleigh, N.C., was honored as the recipient of the 2013 John W. Dargavel Medal by the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Foundation during NCPA's 115th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition, held Oct. 12-16 in Orlando, Fla.
The McKesson Corporation sponsors the annual award that honors an individual whose contributions on behalf of independent pharmacy embody the spirit of leadership and accomplishment personified by John W. Dargavel, who was executive secretary of the National Association of Retail Druggists (NARD), now NCPA, from 1933 to 1961. In fact, the NCPA Foundation was established in 1953 to honor Dargavel.
"We are honored to recognize the many positive and long-lasting contributions of Mike James to the practice of independent pharmacy," said Sharlea Leatherwood, PD, President of the NCPA Foundation. "James is an active member of his community who works tirelessly at the state and national level for the betterment of our profession. He is truly deserving of this year's John W. Dargavel Medal for his lifetime of service and leadership."
James owns two pharmacies in Raleigh, N.C. with his wife. James is Director of Government Affairs for Mutual Wholesale Drug, which is the seventh largest wholesaler in the U.S. He also serves as the Director of Government Affairs for the Association of Community Pharmacists. James has worked closely with the state of North Carolina on its Medicaid program and also in the development of several state prescription drug programs.
James began his career in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. He serves or has served on various boards, such as Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company, the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists, the North Carolina Health Coordinating Council, the North Carolina State Banking Commission, the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association, and others.
Some of James' honors include being named the NCPA Pharmacist of the Year and the North Carolina Pharmacist of the Year; and receiving the "Order of the Long Leaf Pine" award by the Governor of North Carolina (the highest civilian award given by the state) and the Bowl of Hygeia.
The NCPA Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1953 to honor the previous incarnation of NCPA, the National Association of Retail Druggists (NARD) Executive Secretary John W. Dargavel. Contributions to the foundation are tax-deductible as charitable donations to the extent permitted under federal tax law. The NCPA Foundation supports the growth of independent community pharmacy through scholarships to pharmacy students, critical research/programs to improve the success of independent pharmacy and patient care, community service programs, and financial aid to community pharmacy owners for their recovery in the event of disaster or other adverse circumstances.
