Janet Kusler Honored as the 2013 NCPA National Preceptor of the Year

ORLANDO, Fla. (October 14, 2013) – Janet Kusler, RPh, the owner of Kusler's Pharmacy and Matrx LTC Pharmacy in Snohomish, Wash., was named the 2013 National Preceptor of the Year by the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Foundation today at the NCPA 115th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition, held Oct. 12-16 in Orlando, Fla. The National Preceptor of the Year Award honors a pharmacist who has made significant contributions to the education of pharmacy students by devoting time, talent, and efforts as a preceptor.

"Janet believes in giving back to her school and community by cultivating the next generation of community pharmacists," said Sharlea Leatherwood, PD, president of the NCPA Foundation. "We are honored to recognize Janet's commitment to providing hands-on educational opportunities for pharmacy students, and thank her for promoting the independent community pharmacy profession among tomorrow's pharmacists."

Kusler provides four- to six-week externship rotations in compounding for pharmacy students from the University of Washington and Washington State University, her alma mater. She employs and teaches pharmacy interns in all aspects of community pharmacy practice and ownership. In addition, Kusler has given numerous lectures on pharmacy ownership, patient adherence, and the practice of community pharmacy.

In addition to owning two pharmacies, Kusler serves on the board of directors of the Washington State Pharmacy Association and the Dean's Advisory Council at Washington State University. She also serves as a trustee at Everett Community College.

Kusler has received several awards for her work, including the 2006 Innovative Pharmacist of the Year by the Washington State Pharmacy Association, the 2005 Regional Pharmacy of the Year by McKesson, and the 2008 Pharmacist of the Month by PCCA, the Professional Compounding Centers of America.

Kusler is a graduate of Washington State University. Before becoming the co-owner of Kusler's Pharmacy in 1999 and the owner of Matrx LTC Pharmacy in 2013, Kusler was the regional vice president for Option Care, Inc., managing three home infusion branches in the state of Washington. Prior to that, she co-owned and managed an independent home infusion company, Kusler's Option Care, in Everett, Wash.

The NCPA Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1953 to honor the previous incarnation of NCPA, the National Association of Retail Druggists (NARD) Executive Secretary John W. Dargavel. Contributions to the foundation are tax-deductible as charitable donations to the extent permitted under federal tax law.
