Ohio fires PBMs for state Medicaid plans

by NCPA | Aug 14, 2018

On Tuesday, the Ohio Department of Medicaid directed the state's five managed care plans to terminate all contracts with all PBMs. The state will switch to a pass-through pricing model on Jan. 1, 2019. "It will provide volumes of transparency," said Patrick Stephan, director of managed care for the Department of Medicaid. “The black box will effectively be eliminated." NCPA is grateful to Gov. John Kasich for his leadership on this issue. This development is a direct result of work by Ohio Pharmacist Association's campaign to shed light on PBM practices in the state's Medicaid space, which caught the attention of lawmakers and the Columbus Dispatch, which in turn resulted in months of relentless reporting on PBMs. Read all the Dispatch stories here.
