Medication Synchronization

Pharmacists all across the country are leveraging their relationship with patients to improve adherence and provide quality care through medication synchronization (med sync) programs. Med sync allows patients to pick up of all of their ongoing prescription refills at the pharmacy on a single, convenient day each month and work closely with the pharmacist on sticking to their medication regimen. In addition, the once a month appointment day facilitates increased pharmacist-patient dialogue and allows time for additional patient care services.

As we move to a value-based health care environment, there is a need to demonstrate pharmacists’ value to patients and the health care system. The National Community Pharmacists Association, in collaboration with the Arkansas Pharmacists Association and 82 independently-owned pharmacies, conducted a study to measure the impact of pharmacist-provided med sync programs on medication adherence and persistence across a network of pharmacies. PrescribeWellness provided the workflow tool for pharmacies, operating on 13 pharmacy management systems.

NCPA released the results of “Addressing Medication Non-Adherence through Implementation of an Appointment-Based Medication Synchronization Network” to measure the collective impact of pharmacist-provided med sync programs. At NCPA’s request, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences analyzed the data.
